LG Motion have designed and built a detector positioning system for Diamond Light Source’s I24 Microfocus Macromolecular Crystallography (MX) Beamline that has a precision of just tens of microns.
LG Motion were recently approached by Diamond Light Source, the UK’s national synchrotron science facility, to design and manufacture a customised Beamline Detector Positioning System for their I24 Microfocus Macromolecular Crystallography (MX) Beamline.
The I24 is a tuneable microfocus beamline for macromolecular Crystallography (MX) which illuminates minuscule protein crystal samples with an intense X-ray beam. Detectors, positioned to a precision of just a few tens of microns, capture scattered light to show the complexities of the protein structure and help reveal their functions. This information is invaluable to a number of disciplines including genomics, immunology and drug design.
As part of a rebuild of the I24 scientists at Diamond Light Source wanted to increase the flexibility and research throughput on their I24 Beamline. In order to achieve this end they required a XZ positioning rig capable of loading multiple detectors, up to 280kg mass with a volume of around 1 m3, over a 1.55 metre horizontal and 0.85 metre vertical travel range.
To achieve this Diamond Light Source approached LG Motion who applied their engineering skills and motion technology experience to provide a solution based around precision linear rails, with integrated linear encoders and precision ground ballscrews that are connected to a servo motor via flexible couplings.
LG Motion provided a robust yet precise system that met all of their client’s objectives. The beamline detector mounting platform was fabricated from the highly flexible MiniTec modular aluminium profile system and Schneeberger MONORAIL AMS series linear motion guide bearings with linear encoders selected for their exceptional loading characteristics, smooth motion and precision feedback.
Working closely with Diamond Light Source staff, LG Motion ensured that the system was installed on budget, on time and with all safety standards and performance specifications rigorously adhered to.
