The Avestin range of high-pressure homogenisers from Biopharma Group (exclusive distributors for the UK & Ireland) offers consistent, accurate sample processing at adjustable pressures up to 45,000 psi that produces reliable results when scaling up thanks to consistency of design which has been developed with ease of use in mind.
High-pressure homogenisers have a range of applications, including particle size reduction, cellular lysis and emulsification. They work by subjecting a fluid sample to high pressures via forced passage through a narrow orifice. The high shear effect caused by the force of exiting act to rupture the cell or particle while still preserving the integrity of the desired component e.g. cell organelles.
The Avestin range’s easy to use design and unique dynamic homogenising valve has made the range of instruments increasingly popular across both R&D and production environments. With their unique Emulsiflex design there is no leakage, reduced risk of contamination, and easier cleaning, as there are no ‘O’ rings or gaskets in the entire path of the product.
Avestin benchtop models such as the B15, C5 and C3, have become particularly favoured for industrial and academic research uses. The B15, for example, is ideal for small and/or high-value samples with a capacity of 3ml – 15ml batch. The robust pneumatically powered ‘french press’ design, and adjustable pressure of up to 45,000 psi, means that the B15 is capable of processing even the toughest of samples; and with no electrical power required, the unique pump design helps ensures silent operation.
The Avestin C5 provides a great degree of flexibility in user sample processing size, with a desirable minimum sample volume of 7ml and a holdback volume of <1ml. The C5 can provide stringent sample temperature control thanks to control mechanisms that can be installed at either the instrument inlet or outlet. Pneumatically powered, with no electrical connections, and adjustable pressures up to 30,000 psi, the entire system may be immersed in a water/ice bath or used in a cold room.
The Avestin C3 has an electrically driven high-pressure pump, but a minimal need for compressed air/gas. With a consistent flow rate of 3 litres per hour, homogenising pressures can be adjusted to 30,000 psi. Like the C5, the sample temperature control mechanisms can be installed at either the inlet or outlet. The C3 has a minimum sample volume of only 10ml, cold room suitability, and a holdback volume of <1ml that also provides a high level of sample size adaptability.
All of the Avestin high-pressure homogenisers are GMP suitable which permits their use within strict regulatory environments across numerous industries.
