BMG LABTECH’s Microbiology brochure is designed to provide a comprehensive summary of the benefits of using microplate readers for studying microbial growth.
The days of growing multiple cultures in shake flasks - taking time to sample them every 20 minutes to monitor growth – is a distant memory for some, but still endured by others. Whether studying the effect of antibiotics on bacteria, the nutrient requirement of a particular microbe, the growth of biofilms or the expression of a gene in a synthetic biology study, microplate readers can increase throughput.
The advent of microplate readers has provided the ability to measure multiple samples in a single batch of typically 96 well or 384 well plates. Featuring high-temperature stability, multiple shaking options and the option for CO2 and O2 control, BMG LABTECH microplate readers are suitable for sustaining the growth of almost any microbe.
Not limited to measurements at 600nm, multiple wavelengths are possible and can be performed in combination with other read modes - including luminescence and fluorescence in the multimode readers. This increases the complexity of assays that can be considered to include not only monitoring culture growth but also the expression of genes relative to the number of cells, for example.
The microplate format provides the capacity to include multiple replicates and investigate multiple conditions in a single run, enabling the design and execution of experiments that would not otherwise be considered.
