SLS expands operations with two new acquisitions

Scientific Laboratory Supplies (SLS) has announced it has taken over two UK firms active in the UK laboratory sector.
Its acquisitions include West Yorkshire-based equipment distributor Gem Scientific and the Gateshead-based weighing solutions provider Northern Balance.
In a statement, SLS said the two companies would continue with all employees but with the benefit of being able to tap into the new parent firm’s infrastructure and increase their product range.
Managing director Ian Roulstone said: “These new additions to the SLS Group provide further opportunity to serve more customers with a broader range of products and first-class service.
“The move also secures the roles of all existing personnel and will provide further development and recruitment opportunities within a growing organisation that is completely customer focused.”
He added that the acquisitions would aid SLS’s ambition to increase its product offerings and expand into new markets and locations.
Gem Scientific has an established role in the supply of hygienic testing in the food and beverage and other key sectors, while Northern Balance’s specialities include calibration, servicing and maintenance.
Gem Scientific MD Justin Welton and Northern Balance MD Daniel Egan-Sheath said the involvement with SLS would enabled the firms to accelerate growth, as well as enhancing their organisations’ capabilities and reach.
Roulstone added that SLS planned further acquisitions and recruitment to broaden its portfolio into a wider geographical area, within the UK, Ireland, East Africa and elsewhere.
