Deep Science Ventures (DSV) and Medicines Discovery Catapult (MDC) have announced a strategic partnership aimed at accelerating the development of next-generation technologies capable of delivering medicines into the brain.
The collaboration will focus on overcoming one of the most significant obstacles in neurological drug development: transporting therapeutics across the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and effectively into the central nervous system (CNS).
While advances in neuroscience have led to the identification of promising targets for conditions ranging from Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease to brain cancers and rare neurological disorders, delivering treatments to these targets remains a major scientific and commercial challenge.
According to the World Health Organization's Global Status Report on Neurology, neurological disorders affect more than 40% of the world's population and are among the leading causes of disability and poor health globally. Improving access to effective CNS therapies therefore represents a major opportunity for both healthcare systems and the life sciences industry.
As part of the initial phase of the partnership, DSV and MDC will undertake a comprehensive assessment of the current brain drug delivery landscape. The review will identify technological gaps, unmet clinical needs, and opportunities where innovative approaches could significantly improve the ability of therapeutics to reach the brain.
The partners ultimately aim to support the creation of new ventures focused on high-impact brain-entry technologies. Opportunities that meet predefined scientific and commercial criteria could be developed into spin-out companies, supported by pre-seed investment and access to specialist expertise.
DSV's venture-building model will play a central role in the initiative. The organisation specialises in identifying high-potential scientific opportunities and assembling founding teams to create new companies around them. By pre-scoping opportunities and reducing early-stage risk, DSV aims to accelerate the development of breakthrough technologies.
Combining this venture creation expertise with MDC's drug discovery capabilities, translational infrastructure, and industry networks is expected to create a powerful platform for innovation in CNS therapeutics.
Adam Tomassi-Russell, Senior Director at Deep Science Ventures, said: "The blood-brain barrier remains one of the most complex challenges in modern medicine. By combining venture creation with world-class drug discovery expertise, we can help founders develop solutions that address a critical unmet need in neurological disease. Solving the challenge of brain delivery has the potential to unlock an entirely new generation of CNS therapies."
Dr Nicola Heron, Chief Strategy Officer at Medicines Discovery Catapult, added: "This partnership represents an exciting opportunity to identify and develop technologies that could transform the treatment of neurological conditions. By strengthening the innovation ecosystem for CNS drug discovery, we can help accelerate the development of therapies that reach patients more effectively and deliver meaningful clinical impact."
The collaboration highlights growing interest across the life sciences sector in enabling technologies that can unlock the full potential of emerging neurological treatments, an area increasingly viewed as one of the next major frontiers in drug discovery and precision medicine.
