The Oxford Trust has officially unveiled the new Aspen Building, a £9 million investment designed to strengthen Oxford’s position as a global centre for science, technology and innovation while supporting the next generation of high-growth businesses.
Situated at the Wood Centre for Innovation in Headington, the 17,000 sq ft development provides high-quality CL2 laboratory and office accommodation for start-ups, SMEs and scaling science and technology companies. The building was officially opened by Rt. Hon. Dame Anneliese Dodds MP during a ceremony attended by local civic leaders, industry representatives and members of Oxford’s innovation community.
Located within Oxford’s internationally recognised health and life sciences cluster, the Aspen Building has been created to meet increasing demand for flexible laboratory and innovation space. Alongside modern commercial facilities, it also includes a dedicated STEM resources room, allowing Science Oxford to expand its education and outreach programmes across Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire.
The project reflects The Oxford Trust’s long-standing charitable approach, where income generated from its innovation centres is reinvested into science education and public engagement. By supporting ambitious businesses while inspiring future scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs, the organisation continues to strengthen both the regional economy and local communities.
Sustainability has been a key focus throughout the development. The Aspen Building has achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating and incorporates photovoltaic solar panels, battery energy storage, air source heat pumps, rainwater harvesting and biodiversity enhancements across the surrounding woodland environment.
Constructed by Beard, the project supported around 600 jobs during its build phase, including approximately 80 local roles. Once fully occupied, the facility is expected to accommodate businesses creating up to 80 additional skilled jobs, further reinforcing Oxford’s reputation as one of the world's leading locations for scientific research, innovation and technology-led enterprise.
