SPECTRO Analytical Instruments has introduced an enhanced version of its SPECTROSCOUT kt portable energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF) analyser, providing rapid, non-destructive analysis of precious metals and alloys for laboratories, assay offices, jewellers and refiners.
Designed for onsite elemental analysis, the portable instrument delivers results in as little as 30 to 90 seconds, enabling users to verify the composition of gold, silver and other precious metal alloys without damaging the sample. Standardisation requires only a single reference sample and takes around five minutes, helping to minimise setup time.
The SPECTROSCOUT kt measures 25 elements commonly found in precious metal alloys, quantifying both major constituents and minor alloying elements to provide accurate purity and composition data. This makes it suitable for applications including hallmark verification, incoming material inspection, quality control, recycling and valuation.
Built on technology developed for the company's SPECTRO xSORT handheld analyser, the instrument combines portability with silicon drift detector (SDD) technology for high analytical performance. The SDD detector offers improved sensitivity and resolution compared with traditional Si-PIN detector systems, while optional customer-specific calibrations can further optimise measurement accuracy for specialist applications.
Despite its compact footprint, the analyser features a large sample compartment, making it suitable for use in retail environments, laboratories and production facilities where bench space is limited. An integrated video system supports precise 1 mm spot analysis of small components and mixed alloys, while configurable alloy grade libraries simplify material identification.
The system connects via USB to SPECTRO XRF Analyzer Pro software running on a Windows PC or tablet, providing comprehensive data management with access to measurement results, stored spectra and image records.
