Laboratory equipment specialist Eppendorf has introduced the Centrifuge 5811 R, a new refrigerated multipurpose benchtop centrifuge combining the versatility of its established 5810 R model with updated controls and more sustainable cooling technology.
The new Centrifuge 5811 R is the successor to Eppendorf’s widely used Centrifuge 5810 R, retaining its flexibility and performance while introducing a refreshed design and several operational improvements.
A key development is the adoption of R290 propane refrigerant, which has a global warming potential of 0.02 and an ozone depletion potential of zero. Additional features including ECO shut-off, energy-efficient FastTemp and aerodynamic bucket designs are intended to help laboratories reduce energy consumption during operation.
Designed to accommodate multiple workflows within a single instrument, the Centrifuge 5811 R offers a capacity of up to 3 L and speeds of up to 20,913 × g, or 14,000 rpm. Refrigerated operation from −9°C to +40°C also supports temperature-sensitive samples.
A portfolio of 15 rotors and a broad selection of adapters enables the centrifuge to handle tubes, bottles and plates. Swing-bucket and fixed-angle rotors are available, while mixed bucket loading allows different vessel formats to be processed during the same run.
Potential applications range from harvesting and processing cells, bacteria, yeast, algae and other microorganisms to nucleic acid and protein purification and peripheral blood mononuclear cell isolation.
For repeatable workflows, the updated control panel can store up to 35 user programs. Other features include a low access height, Soft Touch Lid, Eppendorf QuickLock rotor lids and caps, and quiet operation.
Eppendorf has also sought to simplify the transition for existing 5810 R users. The new centrifuge is compatible with 16 of the 17 rotors available for its predecessor, allowing laboratories to retain most of their existing rotor investment while moving to the updated platform.
