Teledyne FLIR has introduced the A8481, a high-definition mid-wave infrared science camera offering four times the resolution of VGA models while retaining compatibility with existing A-Series imaging systems and workflows.
Teledyne FLIR has expanded its scientific thermal imaging portfolio with the launch of the A8481, a compact HD MWIR camera developed for demanding research, testing and industrial measurement applications.
Featuring a 1280 × 1024 resolution, 8 µm HOT MWIR SLS detector, the camera delivers four times the pixel count of conventional VGA A-Series models. Its compact design, based on the established A67xx platform, allows researchers to upgrade their thermal imaging capabilities without extensive modifications to existing equipment or infrastructure.
With thermal sensitivity below 30 mK, the A8481 provides detailed radiometric measurements for applications including electronics testing, battery development, combustion analysis, propulsion research, materials evaluation and non-destructive testing.
Compatibility with FLIR's existing precision optics, mounting arrangements and Research Studio software helps simplify integration into established laboratory environments.
The camera supports GigE Vision, GenICam and CoaXPress connectivity, alongside precision triggering and synchronisation for accurate data acquisition. An integrated motorised three-position filter wheel extends temperature measurement flexibility, while interchangeable microscope, macro and conventional lenses allow detailed examination of components and larger assemblies.
For high-speed investigations, windowed imaging modes provide frame rates of up to 13,733 Hz, enabling researchers to analyse rapidly changing thermal events. Fully radiometric recording through FLIR Research Studio Professional also supports subsequent analysis, reporting and collaboration.
According to FLIR, the A8481 addresses the growing requirement for higher-resolution thermal data without the additional cost and complexity often associated with adopting larger imaging platforms.
Available from October 2026 through FLIR's international sales and distribution network, the A8481 offers laboratories and engineering teams a practical upgrade route to high-definition thermal measurement while preserving their existing investment in equipment and software.
