Advancements in the field of 3D technology drew more than 120 participants to the latest LTN event, held on Wednesday 6 December at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London
The event was the second in a series of regular day-long events for LTN, and benefited from an extended list of guest speakers and 46 displays of technologies from universities and research centres across London and south-east England.
The displays demonstrated the wide array of applications for 3D technologies, from face recognition software for security firms, to biomechanical modelling for trainee surgeons and 3D design in fashion.
Attendees were offered insights into new applications within the virtual world of Second Life, and given the chance to take a photograph that captured an object's three dimensions in one click.
Speakers at the event presented key insights into the world of industry and academic research and included representatives from Arup, 2D3, QinetiQ, Ocuity, GE Healthcare Biosciences, BBC Research, Carl Zeiss NTS who were joined by researchers from University of Oxford, University of Surrey, University of Southampton, University College London, Imperial College London and Brunel University.
The talks covered the gamut of 3D technology, from data capture and processing and modelling, through to displays and mechanisms and 3D applications.
For Tatiana Kalganova, lecturer in school of engineering and design at Brunel University, the event presented the chance to make direct contact with companies keen to develop her research.
"We arranged five appointments with companies interested in our work," Kalganova said.
"We also had two face-to-face meetings at the event itself and I had six technologies presented throughout the venue".
Chris Buckley is stream leader in the imaging technology group for GE Healthcare Medical Diagnostics.
As well as speaking at the event, he found time to make new connections.
"I made two contacts which we are actively following up for potential collaborations," Buckley said.
"Indeed, we have invited one of these contacts to talk to us early in the New Year".
The next events for LTN will be held on diabetes and related disorders (31 January 2007), smart metering (28 February 2007), wireless networks (20 March 2007) and stem cells and regenerative medicine (28 March 2007).
