Craic Technologies has launched the QDI CoalPro Vitrinite reflectance measurement system, a rugged microphotometer capable of rapidly and accurately testing vitrinite coal to international standards
"The QDI CoalPro vitrinite reflectance measurement system was designed to help the organic petrologist to increase the accuracy and speed of their vitrinite reflectance measurements.
"The system is an important advance in the instrumentation used to grade the thermal maturity of coals.
"Developing energy resources requires test instruments that are easy-to-use, rugged, and deliver accurate results quickly and in an industry standard format," said Paul Martin, president, Craic Technologies.
He added: "The QDI CoalPro offers scientists and engineers the flexibility, sensitivity and accuracy they need to analyse even the most demanding petrographic samples".
With its flexible design, the QDI CoalPro is capable of measuring vitrinite reflectance at 546nm and can be automatically calibrated to a number of different reflectance standards commonly used for vitrinite reflectance measurements.
The system also includes digital imaging capabilities and the entire measurement process may even be fully automated.
QDI CoalPro software supports both manual and automated measurements and is designed to comply with multiple international vitrinite test methodologies, including ISO 7404-5 and ASTM D2798.
The system is the first commercially available microphotometer to include a thermoelectrically cooled detector option designed to increase long term stability.
It can also be upgraded to enable full-spectral range reflectance, transmittance and fluorescence microspectroscopy in order to address future developments in this and other fields.
All this with can be done with a single instrument.
"With the addition of the QDI CoalPro system, Craic Technologies has expanded its suite of high-performance instruments to support analysis in the energy markets," Martin said.
