Gelcompany has announced the launch of its horizontal high-performance electrophoresis (HPE) system for high resolution, reproducibility and ease-of-use in 1D and 2D gel electrophoresis separations.
In 2D electrophoresis, the HPE technology is claimed to detect up to 15 per cent more proteins spots because it uses thinner pre-cast gels and a more efficient cooling system with higher electric field strength.
This results in running times of around four hours and produces greater resolution and sharper bands or spots.
Together, with its beta test sites, Gelcompany said it has already shown improved results over existing technology and added that its HPE approach will assist researchers in advancing proteomic research projects.
The HPE system uses 1D and 2D pre-cast gels in a Flattop Tower with four horizontal electrophoresis platforms in one system.
The quality-controlled, pre-casted HPE gels on plastic backing are laid onto the cooling plates - eliminating the need for vertical electrophoresis preparation of glass gel cassettes.
There is no need for technicians to handle tanks containing up to 25 litres of buffer fluid, or for cleaning for re-use.
There is also no involvement of toxic monomer acrylamide for gel casting.
The HPE pre-cast gels come in standard 12.5cm x 25cm and large 20cm x 26cm sizes - electrode positions are adjustable for both sizes.
Non-fluorescent film backing is available for fluorescent detection, together with standard film backing for visible staining.
The HPE gels have a one-year shelf life and remain stable during storage.
The equilibration buffer is provided with the HPE gels - meaning fewer variables than conventional electrophoresis.
The HPE system will be demonstrated at the annual HUPO conference in Toronto from 28 September 2009.
