Optec will provide Thermo Scientific Anatomical Pathology cancer diagnostic instrumentation to hospitals across Russia for a national oncological programme.
This is the result of the companies signing a distribution agreement.
Malignant neoplasm is the second most prevalent cause of death in Russia, with approximately 480,000 new cases diagnosed annually.
More than 2.5 million patients are registered in cancer departments across the country, representing 1.8 per cent of the entire population.
The national oncological programme was introduced to promote early diagnosis and timely treatment of the disease.
It is estimated that the programme will reduce the death rate from cancer by four per cent by 2012.
Optec has won eight of the 11 contracts tendered for the right to deliver advanced equipment to Russian cancer departments as part of the oncological programme.
The agreement with Thermo Fisher Scientific enables Optec LLC to supply hospitals in Moscow, Penza, Kirov, Volgograd and Voronezh with more than USD2m (GBP1.23m) of Thermo Scientific Anatomical Pathology cancer diagnostic technology.
Among the solutions Optec will deliver will be the Thermo Scientific Excelsior ES, a powerful tissue processor that can carry out automatic, xylene-free tissue processing with unmatched tissue quality and low cost of ownership.
The Excelsior ES has been designed to meet the most challenging tissue-processing applications, while being easy to operate even by non-experts.
It offers unparalleled safety and maximises productivity.
Optec will also distribute the Thermo Scientific Cytospin 4 Cytocentrifuge.
The instrument provides economical thin-layer preparations from any liquid matrix, especially hypocellular fluids such as spinal fluids and urines.
The system ensures the highest operational safety before, during and after sample preparation.
Furthermore, it is easy to use and is highly reliable.
In addition, Optec will supply the Thermo Scientific Varistain Gemini ES and Thermo Scientific Shandon Varistain 24-4 automated slide stainers, which have been designed to maximise efficiency by organising the staining workflow of laboratories.
The Thermo Scientific Microm HM550DC cryostat, also available, will offer users consistency and reliability in performing frozen sections.
