The Wave bioreactor from GE Healthcare for upstream and downstream biopharmaceutical processing has achieved ecomagination certification.
The Wave bioreactor uses disposable bags in place of permanent stainless steel reactors, eliminating the need for cleaning or sterilisation.
In addition to reducing the amount of water and energy required during the manufacturing process, significant time is saved in the bioreactor preparation.
For the equivalent output, a production facility using the Wave bioreactor system 500 reduces the consumption of ultra-purified water by over 66,000 litres per year, saves 42 per cent in energy and decreases system turnaround time by more than 1,300 hours per year or 92 per cent.
Ecomagination products are aimed at helping biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies reduce their environmental impact.
In order to be recognised as an ecomagination product, Wave had to undergo a rigorous, third-party-validated review process of the operating and environmental improvements it delivers.
