Dr Chris George, a BHF Research Fellow in the Department of Cardiology, explained: "The arrays are used purely as a first step to analyse normal and diseased cells for genetic changes.
"Using differential display and subtractive hybridisation in our experiments are not options anymore, as arraying quickly pinpoints changes in the transcription of known genes." Chris continued: "We decided to use the BD Atlas plastic mouse 5K array because it was the only off-the-shelf kit that did everything in the format we wanted. "It combined the advantages of nitrocellulose and glass formats and we liked the idea of using longer genetic fragments (>80bp) imprinted on plastic." Chris concluded: "We are very happy with the performance of the arrays.
"Several cell culture models have now been set up based on our arraying results and we have recently ordered more plastic arrays of mouse and human genes to continue our work."
