Multi-million pound pharmaceutical primary production facility to increase anti-depressant drug manufacturing capabilities at Seal Sands reaches major milestone
Shepherd Engineering Services (SES) recently completed its work on 'P7', Lundbeck Pharmaceutical's new primary production facility at Seal Sands near Middlesbrough.
The new facility is part of a multi-million pound investment programme at the site to increase its worldwide anti-depressant drug manufacturing capabilities.
Before securing the £2.5 million fast track mechanical and electrical design and install services contract in November 2000, SES demonstrated a value engineering cost saving of £200,000.
One of the most challenging aspects of the project for SES was the layout of the building services around the required process production systems.
To enable SES to design the systems as efficiently and effectively as possible, 3D CAD design was an invaluable tool to 'virtually' show the physical layout of the networks and systems to be installed against other works.
P7 will now produce the active substance for Lundbeck's new product Cipralex, which is used as a treatment for depression.
The high-tech synthesis facility has been designed to meet Lundbeck's aim of keeping the environmental impact from the production at a minimum.
The project manager for the development is Foster Wheeler Energy, with Tilbury Douglas as main contractor.
