These instruments are extremely small (11w x 7h x 16d cm) and portable because they can be battery operated.
So now, instead of collecting samples and bringing them to the laboratory bound instrument, the samples can be measured on the spot by using a variety of immersion probes.
The data can be sent immediately to a PC or laptop PC and then processed by SpectraWiz software into real-time spectra.
This exciting new instrument opens up many possibilities which were previously not possible, such as remote measuring of toxic samples in a fume cupboard or radioactive samples in a glove box.
Or measure the progress of a reaction directly in the vessel in real time. Special accessories also enable tiny samples of four microlitres to be measured.
This will appeal to scientists working with biological fluids and DNA samples.
The StellarNet EPP series are so versatile because they have a monochromator as a modular unit. The instrument also uses 'reverse optics', illuminating the sample with polychromatic radiation.
The whole system remains unaffected by ambient lighting, so there is no need for an enclosed sample compartment.
The 2048 element CCD array detector provides real-time spectra with no moving parts.
Standard cells can be inserted into bench-mounted cell holders and, more importantly, immersion probes can be inserted directly into sample vessels.
