Acquisition of the healthcare division of Appareo, a business which focuses on the delivery of web-based clinical management systems for the sexual health and diabetes sectors
Sysmed Solutions has announced its acquisition of the healthcare division of Appareo, a business which focuses on the delivery of web-based clinical management systems for the sexual health and diabetes sectors.
Following the recent Health Select Committee report damning sexual health services in the UK, effective clinical systems are more essential than ever before in supporting multi disciplinary teams in multiple, often remote, outreach clinics.
The Appareo solution is said to be the only truly web based system on the market for sexual health specialities which address this need.
Diabetes is a chronic disease forecast to affect up to 10% of the population by 2010. Such is the concern that a National Service Framework (NSF) was established at the beginning of the year, to ensure consistency of care and a set of standards.
The Appareo Diabetes System conforms to the requirements of this NSF and incorporates full diabetic retinal screening capability.
All Appareo systems have been designed in close consultation with clinicians and built to support existing processes, facilitate multidisciplinary working and enable access to the right information regardless of location.
The integration of the Appareo healthcare division into Sysmed will enable more rapid delivery of regional data warehouses for sexual health and diabetes.
Over the past two years Appareo has achieved significant recognition for both innovation and delivery of a number of web-based installations around the UK, including St Georges Healthcare NHS Trust.
These user-defined solutions are enabling many clinics to move towards paperless operation.
This is pertinent to diabetes clinics, which must comply with the new NSFs, as well as sexually transmitted infection (STI) clinics, which are under increasing pressure to monitor and control spiralling HIV drug costs.
The Appareo healthcare systems will be fully integrated into Sysmed's pathology IT solution portfolio, which includes the company's core Lims product, WinPath.
Since rapid diagnoses of both diabetes and STIs are crucial and highly dependent on effective and timely access to pathology results, this acquisition provides an excellent match of products between the two companies.
"Our acquisition of Appareo is very much in line with our strategy of building a portfolio of 'best of breed' products to meet the needs of both healthcare professionals and local service providers in the rollout of the National IT Strategy," said Fiona Pearson, CEO of Sysmed. David Jahn of Appareo said: "This acquisition will have a number of key benefits to our customers in the delivery of essential and highly confidential clinical information in specialities such as sexual health."
