Up to 50% of pre-school children in the UK's inner cities are anaemic, according to WHO criteria. A new forum intends to address the issue at its first meeting in May
Blood Counts!, the new forum for education and awareness in healthcare, has announced the topic for its first round table discussion.
'Iron deficiency anaemia in children - UK inner city areas' will debate the shocking statistics which demonstrate that up to 50% of pre-school children living in the UK's cities are anaemic according to WHO criteria.
Chaired by Dr S Mitchell Lewis, the meeting aims to establish the essential components of a UK action plan which will lead to the implementation of an effective anaemia screening and management programme.
Dr Lewis is well recognised as a leading authority on anaemia and has been extensively involved with the World Health Organisation, addressing the issue of anaemia in developing countries.
The seminar will be held at The Royal College of Physicians, Regent's Park, London, on Tuesday 14 May 2002. Interested parties from all healthcare disciplines are invited to participate.
The Blood Counts Forum is a charitable foundation established to provide an open forum where healthcare issues can be discussed and action initiated.
Supported by an educational grant from HemoCue, it plans to address a range of topics where improved education and awareness would benefit the general public.
