Small semi-radiolucent sensors are distributed anywhere on the patient in order to monitor both instantaneous dose-rate and total accumulated dose
Unfors, the Swedish manufacturer of X-ray test instruments, has recently introduced its Patient Skin Dosimeter (PSD) to complement its existing range of radiation protection devices.
Available in the UK from Southern Scientific, the Unfors PSD comprises a small electronics display module with up to four independent cable mounted X-ray sensors.
The display module can be positioned in full view of the operator during an X-ray procedure while the small sensors are distributed anywhere on the patient in order to monitor both instantaneous dose-rate and total accumulated dose.
In addition to displaying this information in an easy to read LCD window, the Unfors PSD will also provide the operator with a visual indication via a flashing LED whenever the dose-rate exceeds a pre-set level.
An optional universal mount is provided that positions the display unit on any manufacturer's equipment.
The sensors are semi-radiolucent and have a very small footprint.
This offers an acceptable compromise between the need to associate the position of the detectors in the X-ray field to underlying patient anatomy while at the same time not unduly affecting diagnostic clarity.
The cables and detectors may be chemically sterilised.
The Unfors PSD will be of particular value to those departments that carry out high dose interventional and CT procedures and for physicists carrying out dose audits who require the facility to obtain an instantaneous result rather than having to use TLDs.
