Bruker BioSpin announces the 800MHz US Plus actively-shielded NMR magnet, with a significant reduction in size and magnetic stray field compared to other 800MHz magnets
This ultra-compact 800MHz magnet significantly increases customers' siting flexibility and can dramatically reduce site preparation costs.
The 800 US Plus standard-bore (54mm) NMR magnet incorporates Bruker BioSpin's proprietary UltraShield-Plus active shielding technology, which reduces magnetic stray fields yet another four-fold over previous shielded 800MHz magnets.
The new 800 US Plus can be placed in a single-storey lab, whereas a traditional 800MHz magnet requires a dedicated two-storey facility.
The US Plus technology also improves protection against external perturbations, for even better field stability and NMR performance.
This can be particularly important in challenging environments such as metropolitan areas where subways and other electrical power sources can adversely affect the magnet.
800MHz magnets are frequently used in structural biology research and the benefits of ultra-high magnetic field strength have also been recognized in membrane protein structure determination and a growing number of materials research applications.
Bruker BioSpin has recently installed the first ultra-compact 800MHz magnet in the biomolecular NMR laboratory of Geoffrey Bodenhausen at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland, where it is used for both in-solution and solid state NMR research on biomolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids.
"The ease of installation results in considerable cost savings," commented Lothar Helm, director of this NMR facility.
"A bulkier magnet would have to be installed in a pit below floor level, requiring heavy lifting gear and the removal of the roof.
"The new ultracompact 800MHz magnet was easy to move through our corridors, without even widening doorways, and could simply be set up on the floor of the laboratory".
