The Nano 4 Life conference, organised by Bio Nano Consulting (BNC), showcased advances in nanotechnology and its application to healthcare in London on 11 February 2009.
Bio-nanotechnology product development consultancy BNC and the Nanotechnology Knowledge Transfer Network (NanoKTN), a UK primary knowledge-based network for micro and nanotechnologies, delivered the conference in partnership with the Wellcome Trust.
BNC organised the conference to explore how nanotechnology can further benefit life science.
Nano 4 Life investigated key areas within life sciences where nanotechnology offers opportunities to advance healthcare provision and improve product development.
Along with keynote addresses from GSK, Astrazeneca and GE Healthcare, academic and industry researchers discussed the intersection between nanotechnology and the bio, pharma and healthcare sectors.
Attendees heard where the technology could provide solutions to healthcare issues and also what researchers need to consider when developing innovations to ensure that companies can apply these ideas to the patients that need them.
The conference discussed how the sector would be able to help solve drug-resistant superbugs and provide major advances in cancer treatment.
One of the Nano 4 Life speakers, Prof Leonard Fass, visiting professor at Imperial College London, said: 'Attendance from such high-profile pharmaceutical companies has helped to highlight the importance of nanotechnology and how it can be used to advance today's life-science sectors.'
