Intertek, a provider of quality and safety solutions, has developed laboratory testing services to detect the presence of 4-methyl-benzophenon in food packaging.
Recent incidents in the European Union have revealed high levels of the chemical in food products.
On these occasions, the chemical component migrated from the packaging material into the food.
It can take weeks to receive the results for standard testing methods for the chemical.
However, Intertek Polychemlab facility's test method is claimed to identify 4-methyl-benzophenon within 24 hours of the samples being delivered to the laboratory.
Intertek also performs indicative migration testing, with test results produced in 48 hours or less.
In addition, Intertek performs the official migration testing method, EN-14338, according to the official standard.
Food producers and packaging vendors benefit from this testing as it helps them to avoid problems in the food supply chain.
