Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics has introduced its automated Vitamin D assay for use on Advia Centaur Immunoassay Systems, to detect vitamin D deficiency, which can lead to rickets and osteoporosis.
The assay is traceable to Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), which is considered the gold standard in vitamin D testing.
It also measures the total 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] level (100 per cent D2 and D3) to ensure patients are correctly evaluated for deficiency, sufficiency or toxicity.
Vitamin D deficiency has long been associated with rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults with long-term insufficiency of calcium and vitamin D leading to osteoporosis.
Recent studies have linked vitamin D deficiency to several other disease states such as cancer, cardiovascular, diabetes and autoimmune diseases.
