German researcher Professor Wolf Lehmann is the latest scientist to receive a coveted award for scientific excellence using mass spectrometry in life sciences.
Sponsored by Applied Biosystems, the award was created to recognise individuals who have extensively contributed to the development and application of mass spectrometry in this field.
Professor Lehmann was chosen by a scientific jury which was appointed by the board of the German Society of Mass Spectrometry and led by last year's winner, Professor Jasna Peter-Katalinic.
Professor Lehmann, who works at the German Cancer Research Centre in Heidelberg, has devoted his time to working in analysis of polar lipids and in proteomics by mass spectrometry techniques at Heidelberg since 1989.
He has published numerous articles on these subjects that have advanced understanding in this area and wrote the often-referenced mass spectrometry book Massenspektrometrie in der Biochemie, published in 1996.
He explained: "I really like the work we do here - it's a mixture of methodological improvement and more or less direct application.
Our work is driven by the problems colleagues experience and I personally find it very satisfying".
The award and prize of €5000 was presented by Professor Peter-Katalinic in a ceremony at Muenster Castle in Germany.
