RSSL has invested in new and innovative equipment to complement the instrumentation used in its foreign body identification service, to become one of the first laboratories in the UK to use the technique of X-ray microfluorescence spectrometry for analysis of foreign materials.
The technique is one of the most versatile tools available for elemental analysis.
It is non-destructive and permits fast, simultaneous, multi-element detection for all elements from sodium to uranium.
It also permits the gathering of qualitative, quantitative and spatial distribution information, and will be especially valuable to RSSL in its analysis of coatings.
In addition to assisting RSSL in its foreign body identification work for the food, drink, pharmaceutical, cosmetics and healthcare sectors, the new equipment will also allow RSSL to develop expertise in other applications such as the analysis of paint chips, ink, metal fatigue, and electronic circuitry and components.
