At the Experimental NMR Conference (ENC) in 2004, Bruker BioSpin introduced the 900 US2 NMR magnet, the world's first actively-shielded 900MHz magnet
The 900 US2 combines Bruker BioSpin's proprietary UltraShield and UltraStabilized technologies.
Bruker BioSpin's proven UltraStabilization sub-cooling technology allows safe and very stable operation of ultra-high field NMR magnets.
UltraShield technology typically reduces the volume enclosed by magnetic stray fields by an order of magnitude.
The combination of both Bruker technologies, previously already achieved at 800MHz, has now resulted in the world's first actively shielded 900MHz magnet.
The 900 US2 magnet provides the highest field strength with a magnetic stray field that has only one tenth the volume and one fourth the footprint of a conventional, non-shielded 900MHz magnet.
The 900 US2 magnet features a compact design that enables it to fit into the same cryostat as the conventional nonshielded 900MHz magnet.
The 900 US2 magnet uses substantially more superconducting wire and therefore is about 30% more expensive than an unshielded 900MHz magnet.
However, in most cases this increase in cost will be offset by significantly reduced facilities costs.
Bruker BioSpin now offers US2 magnet models at two field strengths - 800 and 900MHz.
Combined with Bruker BioSpin's Avance NMR spectrometer, they are ideal for structural biology applications.
Gerhard Roth, managing director of Bruker BioSpin , explained: "We have already delivered and successfully installed eight 900 MHz magnets to customer sites, and we have a similar number of 900MHz systems on order.
"Our 900MHz systems are the most successful in the market, and we see increasing demand, but siting requirements remain formidable.
"Our new actively-shielded 900 US2 magnet overcomes many siting limitations, and makes 900 MHz systems accessible to even more NMR research groups.
"Other 900 customers may wish to preserve valuable laboratory space for future flexibility or other priorities."
