Academy Savant has released two modules in its 'Practical Lab Skills' series of e-learning programmes.
The new titles are: 'Purification Techniques', comprising gravity filtration, suction filtration, recrystallisation, sublimation, and refluxing; and 'Extraction Techniques', comprising solvent extraction, soxhlet extraction, continuous flow extraction, and drying samples.
The modules are available through the Savant website.
Using live-action camerawork in a real lab, the programmes show close-up demonstrations of the correct and safe method of carrying out laboratory procedures.
Each module contains about 30 minutes of video with voice-over that can be displayed as text and also printed out.
Assessment is accomplished through automatically scored multiple-choice quizzes and reviews with open-ended questions.
There is also a glossary of technical terms.
Licenses are offered online and on CD, ranging from short-term access on individual computers to permanent long-term network/intranet installations.
