Bioo Scientific’s new HistaStrip Test Kit uses dipstick technology for the rapid visual determination of histamine in seafood, fish meal, wine and milk.
The proprietary strips can detect unsafe levels of histamine in food samples in four minutes without the use of any laboratory equipment, organic solvents or heating steps.
Histamine is a contaminant sometimes found in seafood when improperly handled and high levels of histamine in seafood can cause scombroid poisoning.
The amount of histamine can also be determined using ELISA or LC-MS.
However, these traditional methods require very expensive equipment and time consuming sample preparation procedures.
Bioo Scientific’s strips contain a pad impregnated with histamine-specific reagents which undergo a chemical reaction when it comes into contact with histamine in seafood, milk or wine.
When the strips are dipped into samples containing histamine, the pad rapidly changes color to indicate the presence of the analyte.
Detection capabilities using the strips are below global action levels.
