The article entitled: "High-throughput peptide mass fingerprinting and protein microarray analysis using chemical printing strategies" by Sloane et al, can be viewed as a "Paper in Press" at mcponline.org.
Dr Andrew Gooley, Chief Scientific Officer, Proteome Systems said "This is a new approach to analysis of authentic proteins, including their modified forms, after two dimensional array and transfer onto membranes.
The technology involves nanolitre microfluidic printing onto individual protein spots.
Each arrayed protein becomes an archive for multiple analyses, either using enzymatic treatment (for example, peptide mass fingerprinting, N-glycoform analysis) or chemical cleavage (for example, O-glycoform analysis) and subsequent mass spectrometric analysis.
Chip-based analysis is also possible by printing a matrix of antibodies onto the arrayed proteins, followed by fluorescence detection".
Dr Keith Williams, CEO, Proteome Systems, said "This is the first proteomics technology to allow archiving and multiple analysis of precious samples, including those obtained from clinical material.
When combined with Proteome Systems' new technologies for arraying rare, small, large, membrane and alkaline proteins, this provides a new dimension for high-throughput proteomics". The instrumentation used in this study is being commercialized in a partnership between Proteome Systems and Shimadzu Corporation of Japan.
The first instruments are expected to be available for evaluation by 2003.
