Varian's VF- 5ht UltiMetal column for high temperature gas chromatography (GC) is resistant to damage under extreme operating conditions
These highly durable columns allow chemists to confidently analyse samples at very high temperatures, up to 450C.
Based on a stainless steel capillary, Varian's UltiMetal columns address several problems associated with fused silica columns.
A proprietary manufacturing process renders the steel inert and enhances the bonding of the stationary phase.
The result is long column lifetime with excellent peak shape and low column bleed for the best detection limits at high temperatures.
The UltiMetal column is a high performance, lasting solution for high temperature gas chromatography The columns have wide applicability in the separation of high boiling mixtures such as long chain hydrocarbons, polymers, plastics, waxes, heavy polyaromatic hydrocarbons, tars, triglycerides, motor oils, surfactants and crown ethers.
The VF-5ht UltiMetal column is the latest addition to Varian's FactorFour range of low bleed GC columns.
FactorFour columns offer bleed specifications up to four times better than alternative products, says the company.
The columns are synthesised using a proprietary stabilization technology that results in high signal-to-noise ratios for trace analysis, lower detector contamination for reduced maintenance, better spectra, fewer background ions and faster stabilization.
In short, they provide better chromatography.
"Less column breakage results in savings for laboratories that analyse samples with high temperature GC," says Martin O'Donoghue, senior vice president, scientific instruments, Varian.
"Higher temperatures are often applied to speed up the analysis of high boiling components and boost productivity.
"The VF-5ht UltiMetal column is the ideal solution for these applications."
