Heart infusion broth is a highly nutritious liquid medium free of bovine brain material, for the cultivation of streptococci, pneumococci, meningococci and other fastidious organisms
Oxoid has extended its range of culture media with the addition of heart infusion broth (CM1032) - a highly nutritious liquid medium for the cultivation of streptococci, pneumococci, meningococci and other fastidious organisms.
Developed to give performance characteristics equivalent to brain heart infusion broth, new Oxoid heart infusion broth is free from bovine brain material.
Though the bovine brain used in Oxoid brain heart infusion broth is not specified risk material (SRM), its exclusion in heart infusion broth may ease potential regulatory issues for the user in certain applications.
In addition to the cultivation of streptococci, pneumococci, meningococci and other fastidious organisms, Oxoid heart infusion broth can be supplemented with yeast extract, haemin and menadione to improve the growth of bacteroides spp.
Simple additions to this medium will also make it suitable for blood culture or the cultivation of yeasts and moulds.
