High resolution ultrasonic spectroscopy gives a simple measurement of the concentration of glucose in blood that does not require any optical transparency or optical activity
Ultrasonic Scientific announces the addition of a new application for high resolution ultrasonic spectroscopy (HR-US) - the measurement of the concentration of glucose in blood/biological liquids.
Rapid measurement of the glucose level in blood is essential in providing quality care to a variety of patients, from newborn infants to diabetes management in adults.
The award-winning HR-US technology is non-destructive, extremely sensitive, requires no markers and can be used in non-transparent samples (such as blood).
Using HR-US to analyse glucose in blood eliminates work and provides very accurate determinations in minutes, using fewer reactions, says the company.
The traditional enzymatic glucose test is based on a double sequential reaction. An example, glucose oxidase (the enzyme) catalyzes oxidation of glucose.
To make this reaction visible, a secondary reaction is used, which requires additional chemicals and sample handling operations.
Using Ultrasonic Scientific's HR-US technology allows direct real time monitoring of the main reaction, negating the need for the second reaction at all.
HR-US gives a simple measurement of the concentration of glucose in blood that does not require any optical transparency or optical activity. Therefore, complex sample preparation procedures (often required by other techniques) become obsolete.
Other advantages of the HR-US technique include the ability to perform measurements using only a micro drop of a concentrated sample and to analyse molecules in their original state.
