Bruker Daltonics has announced novel smartbeam laser technology for its Ultraflex II Maldi-Tof/Tof mass spectrometer for cutting-edge proteomics applications.
Conventional Nd:YAG lasers used in Tof/Tof mass spectrometry can have significant limitations that make them less suitable for a number of important applications, including intact protein analysis, Maldi imaging and typical Maldi sample protocols for proteomics such as thin-layer or DHB matrix preparations (as well as for synthetic polymer analysis).
These analytical limitations have now been overcome with the innovative, proprietary smartbeam technology (patent applied for) used in a novel variable repetition-rate 1-200Hz all-solid-state laser system on the Ultraflex II system, says Bruker.
The new smartbeam technology permits the use of all matrixes and sample preparation methods typically used in Maldi-Tof analysis, from dried droplet to sandwich preparation techniques.
Importantly, smartbeam achieves highest sensitivity from robotic sample preparation methods like thin-layer preparation, which offers on-target sample purification and avoids time- consuming pre-purification steps.
In particular, the Ultraflex II with smartbeam technology is said to be an excellent platform for Maldi imaging of tissue samples.
Together with the new flexImaging software, the Ultraflex II turns into a very capable 200Hz Maldi imaging instrument.
The flexImaging software provides an easy-to-use tool for two-dimensional peptide and protein imaging of cell or tissue extracts and enables visualisation of the spatial distribution of biomarkers.
Armin Holle, director of life-science instruments R and D at Bruker Daltonics, explains: "The new Ultraflex II with smartbeam technology enables next-generation Maldi-Tof/Tof performance for a variety of applications like gel-based or LC-based expression proteomics, clinical proteomics, Maldi imaging and the top-down analysis of intact proteins.
"With smartbeam we offer for the first time access to all typical Maldi applications and protocols with the speed and reliability of 200Hz all-solid-state lasers.
"This represents a breakthrough in the broader bioanalytical applicability of high-end Tof/Tof systems."
