The Royal Microscopical Society (RMS) has announced that its bid to bring the 15th European Microscopy Congress (EMC) to London in 2012 has been successful.
The aim of the 2012 bid was to take advantage of the attention that London will receive in the run-up to and during the Olympics and Paralympics.
The RMS will stage a genuine festival of microscopy after these events at London's Excel from 16 to 21 September 2012.
The bid was submitted in January and Prof Mark Rainforth, president of the RMS, presented it in September to the General Council of the European Microscopy Society during EMC 2008.
'The aim is to bring all disciplines of light, electron and scanning microscopy together at a European level,' said Rob Flavin, RMS executive director.
'Many of the positive features of Microscience will be incorporated and a host of new ideas will be introduced for what will be the largest and most ambitious event in the society's history.' The event will showcase the latest research and developments in all forms of microscopy through the exhibition, while also educating and sharing scientific findings through the accompanying scientific conference, workshops, tutorials and discussions.
