Paradigm Diagnostics has developed and is marketing a one hour test for listeria in the environment.
The test is read on a hand held luminometer.
Test data are available within one hour of the time the sample reaches the laboratory.
No pre-enrichment is required because of the analytical sensitivity of the test (10-100CFU/ml).
In field testing and in validation testing in private reference laboratories this test has shown >99% predictive accuracy for negative results.

This test does not require an instrument.
A visual interpretation is very easy.
The test is incubated in a self-contained sampling and growth media at 37C or 18-24 hours.
The 24 hour test has been shown to be sensitive to 50-100CFU/ml and detects five listeria species within 24 hours (LM, LI, LW, LS, ) and L.Iv within 48 hours.
This detection method is perfect for processors who do not have reference or corporate laboratories near and who must ship RTE products within a short time period to conserve shelf life.
This test has also been exposed to comparison studies using standard methods and found to perform as well or better than many standard methods. Paradigm says it finds listeria that some of the better known tests are missing.
Paradigm Diagnostics has developed, tested and is marketing specialty growth media which, it says, allows listeria to grow more quickly than any other commonly used enrichment media and is more effective in knocking down cross-reacting or competing bacteria.
Using Paradigm's proprietary growth and selection media can reduce pre-enrichment time for PCR, Elisa and other tests that require population enhancement prior to analysis by as much as 50%.
